1.10 Frenzy Barb Guide
by Mikeandroe

I recently started this build on US East ladder, and am having a ball playing it through. To help make this guide, I tested using a blank CLvl 99 character on Single Player.

Skills

Combat Skills
Frenzy - 20
Berserk - 15-18** (Frenzy Synergy)
Double Swing* - 10 (Frenzy Synergy)

Masteries
Axe Mastery - 20
Increased Stamina - 1
Increased Speed - 1
Iron Skin - 1
Natural Resistances - 1

Warcries
Taunt* - 11 (Frenzy Synergy)
Shout - 10
Battle Orders - 10
Battle Command - 1
War Cry - 1***

Total Pre-Reqs - 5

* Note: Depending on how you play it out, you can allocate as many points as you wish to either Taunt or Double Swing. If you play through the game, you might put points into Double Swing early for an attack. If you rush through, you might be better served placing only 1 point in Double Swing, and getting the most out of Taunt. Either way, you should try to end up with 20 points between the two. A point in either will add 8% damage to Frenzy.

**Note: This has probably been the most contested skill allocation of this build. Some feel anything more than 1 in Berserk is overkill, personally, I found it to be very helpful. For OB Knights and their IM, Berserk prevents the 1 swing-death. Additionally, the added 15-18% magic damage to Frenzy, means no need for weapon or skill switching against PI's. It's your call as to how many points you place here. If you decide to put less, I suggest switching those points over to Shout, Battle Orders, and/or Frenzy synergies.

***Note: I initially did not include War Cry in the build, but after hearing some suggestions, I decided to try it. My advice...DEFINITELY place at least 1 point into this skill. It will make your life so much easier, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. A good goal to shoot for is SLvl 11, for a 3 second stun.

Also note, this build takes into account leveling up to 99. If you don't plan on going that high, I would say chop 10 off of Berserk and Axe Mastery. However high you go, you should put at least one point into all the "1 pointers", Max Frenzy, and pump it's synergies.

Stats

Strength - 200 This should be the most you'll need. You'll need a final total of 232 to wear Sacred Armor, there are plenty of items that give + to STR. Many of the items I will suggest later on do just this. However, keep in mind that more Strength = more Damage, so it's not a bad idea to pump it higher than the absolute minimum you'll need for equip. I was able to use all of the listed equipment, and not "pop", with a base STR of 144. As long as you meet the min req for the "boosting" equipment, you won't "pop" the armor if you die. So feel free to place only 144 into STR, and allocate the rest to VIT if you choose.

Dex - 100 mostly for AR. With this much in, 95% to hit is achievable. I have heard of a No-Dex Frenzy build, but the website it's located on isn't working. I was able to hit in Hell with 0 Dex, but why struggle?

Vit - 205 (balance) too much life is never enough.

Energy - 0

Equipment

I usually don't like to suggest specific pieces of equipment, however this build has one critical piece. While it will work without it, it's a LOT more fun with it. As for the rest, all of the bold items when combined will give you 135% resist all, +7 Barb Skills, +2 Combat Skills, 18-23% DR, and a bunch of Crushing Blow/Open Wounds/Deadly Strike.

Weapon 1 - Beast Runeword Berserker Axe The Lvl 9 Fanat aura & 40% IAS, combined with a Lvl 20 Frenzy gets you to the fastest attack rate possible (5 frames per attack). All taken care of in one weapon. The added damage for you and your party is a nice bonus. I wish like hell that you could use the Wearbear skill it provides, but alas you can't Frenzy while shapeshifted. However, the +%ED, Crushing Blow, Open Wounds, Prevent Heal, and Grizzly charges rock.

Weapon 2 - Famine Runeword Berserker Axe Despite Berserk adding 20% magic damage to your attack, you'll still want to deal some elemental. Famine is BIG physical, along with BIG elemental. One of my favorite weapons.

Alternates: BotD, Call to Arms, Hand of Justice, Doom, Fury, Kingslayer, Eternity Runeword Berserker Axes. Gimmershred (affected by Axe Mast when used melee style), Guardian Naga, Rune Master (socketed with 40/15's = sweet), Cranebeak (Fast, High Damage), Death Cleaver (Deadly Strike), Butcher's Pupil, good Rare Axe (high %ED, IAS). Whichever 2 axes you choose, make sure you wield the faster one in your Barbs right hand, as Frenzy speed is affected by this. The best combo's I tried were... BotD & Beast, Beast & Famine, Beast & Doom Note to "poor" players...I was able to run Baal in an 8 player game using Death Cleaver and Butchers Pupil (upgraded). It takes a while, but it's certainly possible.

Armor - Chains of Honor Runeword Sacred Armor +2 Skills, 65% Resists, 8% LL, and 8% DR. What more could you need?

Alternates: anything with resists!! Without a shield, you'll need them wherever you can get them. + skills are good too, as it will boost Natural Resistances. Tyreals Might, Arkaines Valor, Duriels Shell

Helm - Arreats Face Unique Slayer Guard All your barb could ever want in a helm. Socket it with a Ber Rune for extra DR.

On a sidenote, I REALLY wanted to use Wolfhowl with this build. I was hoping that perhaps the Barb could shapshift into either a Bear or Wolf, and then use Frenzy (a Werebarb, now wouldn't THAT have been insane?). However, like a druid, once you shapeshift, you can't use most of your skills. You can use Feral Rage which also comes on Wolfhowl, but if I wanted to run around in Wereform solely using Feral Rage, I'd either make a Druid or forget about Frenzy.

Gloves - Dracul's Grasp Unique Vampirebone Gloves Life Tap goes off often, making these gloves invaluable. Added 7% LL, and 25% Open Wounds adds icing to the cake.

Alternates: Souldrainer, Hellmouth, Lavagout, Crafted Blood Gloves (Crushing Blow, LL), Crafted Safety Gloves

Boots - Gore Rider Unique War Boots Crushing Blow and Deadly Strike along with more Open Wounds. Great for any Melee char.

Alternates: Sandstorm Trek, War Travs, Crafted Blood Boots, Crafted Safety boots

Belt - Verdungo's Hearty Cord Unique Mithril Coil +Vit and DR make this the belt to use for any melee build.

Alternates: String of Ears, T-God's Vigor (vs. Lightning), Crafted Blood Belt (Open Wounds, LL), Crafted Safety Belt

Amulet - Mara's Kaleidoscope Can't beat it with Resists and + Skills.

Alternates: Highlord's Wrath, Saracen's Chance, Mahim-Oak Curio, Eye of Etlich

Ring 1 - Bul-Kathos' Wedding Band Mainly for the + skills

Ring 2 - Wisp Projector Aside from the obvious reasons for using it, the Heart of Wolverine Charges will boost your AR and Damage.

Alternates: Raven Frost, Dwarf Star (can be swapped with Wisp Projector for different elemental absorbs. AR on Raven is sweet too), Natures Peace (get's rid of corpses, Prevent Monster Heal is awesome, and Oak Sage charges boost Life and Defense), Magics or Rares with Resists, LL if needed.

Merc

All around best would be a Defiance Merc, wielding a Doom Runeword Polearm. The Enhanced Defense of Defiance, combined with the Slowing Action of Holy Freeze make this the # 1 choice for a companion. I suggest hiring him in A2 normal, and leveling him with you as you go. Between my merc's Defiance Aura, Iron Skin, and Shout, I hit 18K Defense.

Alternatively, with all the defensive boosts already provided in this build, you could choose a Might Merc for the added damage. A Doom Runeword Polearm is preferred regardless of which Merc aura you choose.

If Doom is out of your price range, or if you plan on using Doom yourself, almost any Elite Polearm or Spear will do fine. Preferred mods for your Merc are %LL, IAS, %ED, and any % to cast. A good rare with high %ED should not be overlooked.

Strategy

The strat for this build is extremely simple...

Cast Battle Command, Battle Orders and then Shout.
Cast War Cry to stun crowds
Race into the crowds and chop them up with Frenzy.
Quaff a potion if necessary, though with Life Tap popping off ever couple of minutes, you won't need many.
Enjoy!
